The STL, An Environmental Leader

Bus MaintenanceThe Société de transport de Laval is doing its utmost to make its day-to-day operations a model for environment-friendliness. This is a key organizational value and a firm commitment on the part of our management team.

Supporting the cause of air pollution control is a logical follow-up to our actions. We’re not afraid to innovate by offering a public transit fare policy specifically adapted to smog days.

Thanks to this measure, we estimate that 1500 vehicles may be removed from road traffic on smog days. And perhaps the motorists who try public transit on these smog days will then permanently change over to this means of transportation. That’s what we hope.

We’re the only public transit corporation in Québec supporting the fight against air pollution in this way, and we’re very proud of this. And we’re even more proud of the fact that our efforts are recognized by environmental circles. “The STL is in the process of writing an important chapter on the fight against pollution,” pointed out the Association québécoise de lutte contre la pollution atmosphérique (AQLPA). “We extend them our congratulations!” stated AQLPA President André Belisle. Moreover, according to Mr. Belisle, the Société de transport de Laval (STL), of all AQLPA’s partners, has the firmest conviction within AQLPA’s Faites de l’air! program.

This program provides an opportunity for owners of old vehicles to get rid of them in exchange for monthly public transit passes valid throughout Greater Montréal. As it may be recalled, vehicles 10 years old and over account for 10% of the motor vehicles on the roads today, yet they are responsible for 50% of air pollution emissions.

Waste management

The STL looks after the waste it produces! It therefore makes a complete record of the waste produced by its activities and calls upon a number of specialized suppliers to properly dispose of it in an environmentally-friendly way. Here is a bit of information on these suppliers’ services:

Since January 1, 2008, all the  vehicles in the STL’s fleet have been filling up with gasoline made of B5 biodiesel, which comes from recycling used cooking oil and animal fat.

Using this fuel helps cut down on CO2 emissions at a rate of 926 metric tons annually, which is equivalent to removing 200 vehicles from the road, each covering a distance of 20,000 kilometres per year. This is a significant contribution toward reducing greenhouse gases, and the STL will be pursuing its efforts in this regard.
