The STL gets involved

Boomerangboomerang

Ever since it was set up in 2002, the STL’s Boomerang Committee has pursued its mission of organizing philanthropic activities in aid of a good cause—one of the programs of the Centre de bénévolat de Laval: breakfast snacks that give young Laval residents from disadvantaged families a chance to go to school on a full stomach.

Why this choice? Because these students of today are the citizens of tomorrow. Because helping them become properly nourished is contributing toward their academic success and therefore, in the long term, to the socio-economic development of the Laval population. It should moreover be mentioned that this program exists thanks to three main sponsors, including the STL. The funds raised in 2010 come to a total of over $18,000.

Since January 1, 2008, the 228 vehicles in the STL’s fleet have been filling up with gasoline made of
B5 biodiesel, which comes from recycling used cooking oil and animal fat. Using this fuel helps cut down on CO2 emissions at a rate of 926 metric tons annually, which is equivalent to removing 200 vehicles from the road, each covering a distance of 20,000 kilometres per year. This is a significant contribution toward reducing greenhouse gases, and the STL will be pursuing its efforts in this regard.
